LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – At schools across the nation, student athletes will soon be back on the field preparing for fall sports. When they do head out for practice there will be new guidelines for treatment of heat illnesses.
As part an update by the National Athletic Trainers Association, experts now recommend athletes with suspected heat stroke be cooled immediately in a cold water immersion tub before being taken the hospital.
NATA also says pre-season practices should focus on getting students acclimated to the heat and that all schools should have an emergency action plan specifically for heat illnesses.
