LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Kentucky graduates leave college with more than $20,000 in debt on average, and Alison Lundergan Grimes is hopeful that her remedy could be another wedge issue as she tries to pry Mitch McConnell out of the Senate.

Grimes, touting her plan for college affordability, was joined at the University of Louisville's Red Barn by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, whose bill to allow some student loans to be refinanced died in the Senate in June.

"It's about billionaires or students," Warren said. "I'm standing here with a woman who said, in that choice, I'm going with the students."

Grimes said that McConnell "turned his back on the students" when he voted to sustain a filibuster on Warren's bill.

Aaron DuVall of the UofL College Republicans agrees that student debt is an issue, but doesn't support Grimes' plan. He thinks other solutions, like a bipartisan bill McConnell voted for in 2013, provide better options.
