GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

A woman alleges a body police discovered in an abandoned house in Gilbert on Saturday is that of her mom who passed away in September of 2010, investigators said.

Janet Delatorre, 60, who owns the home, told investigators that she did not report the death because conditions in the house were so bad she was afraid she would be accused of elder abuse or neglect.

Delatorre said her mother would have been 95 years old at the time of her death, according to her statement to police.

"It was actually past the point of decomposition. It was almost a petrified or mummified state. The skin was still there but no bones exposed," said Gilbert Police Sergeant Jesse Sanger.

The Gilbert Police Department is trying to verify Delatorre's statements and the medical examiner has not identified the body.

Officers discovered the body on Saturday morning after they were called to the home in the 500 block of Leah Lane to check on the welfare of a pet bird.

Police said if the information Delatorre gave them pans out to be true, she could be charged with failing to report the death.
