HARRISON COUNTY, IN (WAVE) -  Indiana State Police searched for John Carpenter since June 24 believing he shot three men, killing two of them the day before.

"We'd considered him armed and dangerous," Indiana State Police Sergeant Philip Hensley said.

Wednesday night Carpenter's car was found abandoned. Police knew he had to be nearby. By Saturday, they zeroed in on roughly three square miles of hilly farmland near Heidelberg Road, north of Fairview Church Road.

"The vantage point was either seeing rolling fields or heavy, thick foliage woods," Hensley recalled.

Police scoured the area, checking out James Hubbard's farm, asking neighbors to keep an eye out.

"I could see the headlights," Hubbard said of police. "It was 1 in the morning."

Officers set a perimeter.

"It was pitch black, it was absolutely dark," Hensley recalled.

They waited for the sun to shed some light. It was on a whim that one officer decided to drive up the road to search one more place.

"That barn never crossed my mind once," Hubbard said.

Carpenter was found inside a barn on top of the loft above the hay. Hensley said he didn't put up a fight. He was shirtless, starving and thirsty.

"Here at the scene, from what I witnessed, he didn't have anything to say," Hensley said.

The 35-year-old joins two others, Elbert Brooks and James Davidson, now charged with 2 counts of murder, and 1 count of attempted murder and burglary. Carpenter's mother told us he is a good son and father and hopes the real killer is caught.

"John is not a shooter, and John is not a killer. That's not in his makeup," Debbie Carpenter explained.

For now his mom gives thanks no one was hurt during the arrest and prays for the families of the men who were killed last week.

"Those people are going to need a lot of support, a lot of  prayers, for many days to come, many years to come," she said.

Police didn't confirm whether Carpenter had a gun on him or not. They were going to begin questioning him Monday.

His mother said he has a 3-year-old daughter who is going to need a lot of support.
