LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - During the World Cup, flags are not only a popular way for fans to show their support for their favorite teams, but also a profitable way for a Louisville based business to cash in.
Business has been booming at Walker Flags, so much so, the family-owned business has been taking orders from all over the nation.
From international flag selection to updates on which teams are still in the running, Walker Flags staff are tapping to the World Cup excitement.
"I go to my son," said Dana Walker Butz, Walker Flags co-owner. "He's 23 and he plays a lot of soccer so he's my source of what countries are still in."
"The passion started with my father 60 years ago," said Walker Butz.
Although military sales make up a big chunk of the home-grown company's orders, the World Cup is helping score orders from all over the United State and not just for Team USA.
"We've been selling a lot of Brazil flags," said Walker Butz. "World Cup is increasing our international flag sales, especially 3x5' because this is good for putting on a wall."
While the Walker crew might not be able to sing along with fans as they proudly belt international anthems, Walker Butz said being able to connect fans with their favorite team's flags remained a fulfilling experience in itself.
"People come in here and they realize that we have a flag of their country, it's very special to them," said Walker Butz.
It has also been very profitable for Walker Flags, as the family business quickly becomes the go-to source for Louisville's international soccer fans.
While the US will play again in the World Cup on Tuesday, fans wishing to root on a foreign team can take advantage of a 15% off discount being offered by Walker Flags on international flags throughout the month of July. To learn more about Walker Flags, click here.
