Perrysburg Schools employee arrested for theft

PERRYSBURG, OH _(Press Release) -

Perrysburg School employee Eric Whitson was arrested for theft Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release from the school district.

Whitson has worked in the school district's treasury office since 2004, primarily handling accounts receivable and accounts involving student activities for the district.  Perrysburg Schools has put Whitson on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

Whitson has been charged with two felony counts of theft.

Wood County Prosecutor Paul Dobson says Whitson is accused of transferring more than $80,000 from the districts accounts to the Bowling Green Athletic Booster Club in the form of two unauthorized checks. Whitson was the treasurer of the club.

"It appears, at least at these initial stages, that he was taking unauthorized funds from the Bowling Green Booster Club at the Athletic Booster Club and he utilized the Perrysburg funds in order to replenish that," Dobson said at a press conference Thursday.

A search warrant for Whitson's house has also been issued. It is unclear if that warrant has been executed.

According to school officials the district is audited every year, and last year's audit revealed no discrepancies or irregularities.

The school district says they are cooperating fully with the Wood County Prosecutor's Office as well as the Perrysburg Police Department.
