HARVEY, LA (WVUE) -

Shots were fired Thursday morning after a man working on a construction site was robbed at gunpoint, police say.

Officers say the incident happened around 8:15 a.m. Thursday as a 63-year-old man was confronted at his work place near Manhattan and Elton Court in Harvey.

According to the victim, a man armed with a pistol approached him and demanded his property. The victim complied and the victim walked away from the scene.

Police say the victim got into his vehicle, followed the suspect and called the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. At this time, police say the suspect turned and fired at the victim.

Deputies arriving on the scene spotted the suspect who then fled the scene. Deputies say they recovered clothing and a gun used during the robbery.

Authorities say that the suspect was located a short time later and arrested inside of a business in the 2300 block of Manhattan. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Dernard Harris, was arrested and charged with armed robbery.

Deputies say Harris has juvenile arrests dating back to 2001. He also has an extensive arrest and conviction record as an adult.
