LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A woman is charged with murder after she hit and killed a tow truck driver who was assisting another vehicle, police said.

Witnesses told police that the victim, Jewan Turner, was outside of his truck on the side of the road when he was hit. A car driven by Paula Oppel first hit the car Turner was assisting and then hit Turner, they said.

Oppel, 53, also faces charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

The Jefferson County Coroner's office said Turner, 35, died at the scene after suffering multiple blunt force injuries.

MetroSafe said  police were called to the accident on Beulah Church Road near the Gene Snyder Freeway/Interstate 265 around 11:40 p.m. Thursday.

Oppel left the scene but was arrested around 3 a.m. Friday. Her blood alcohol content was found to be .172, more than twice the legal limit, according to court records.

Oppel is being held on a $25,000 cash bond.
