Driver killed leaving Madison Regatta

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Police say a driver was killed leaving the Madison Regatta when a guard rail pierced the driver’s compartment of his truck and ejected the victim through a rear window.

According to a release from the Indiana State Police, James Bagshaw of New Albany was declared dead at the scene of the accident on State Road 62 near the east junction of State Road 56.

Police say Bagshaw was traveling west on SR 62 when he veered across the eastbound lane, struck a utility pole south of the road, spun into a car travelling eastbound and finally hit the front end of guard rail.

Trooper Chris Tucker said he believes marijuana and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

Bagshaw’s passenger and two people in the car he hit were treated for minor injuries, police said.

The investigation is still ongoing, and toxicology results are pending.
