JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) – The Clark Memorial Bridge, also known as the Second Street Bridge, will close at midnight Tuesday and remain closed for just over six weeks for construction associated with the Ohio River Bridges Project.

The bridge will be completely closed. No vehicles, bicyclists or pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge during the 44-day closure while crews work to demolish the existing Indiana approach to the bridge.

“We're going to be building new off and on ramps to the existing bridge,” said Max Rowland with Walsh Construction.

Crews will reconfigure how US 31 traffic accesses Court Avenue. The new US 31 entrance and exit ramps to and from Court Avenue will be in use when the bridge reopens. Two lanes of Court Avenue, one in each direction, will be open during the six-week closure. Drivers will be detoured to the Kennedy Bridge.

Jeffersonville and Louisville police officers will be standing by along popular detour streets assisting drivers.

Crews will also spend about a year constructing a new flyover bridge.

“[It] will actually take traffic, northbound traffic, up and over Court Avenue and then up and over I-65 and then merge back into 65 north,” Rowland said.

“The one thing the Sherman Minton [closure] taught us two years ago was that downtown Louisville can get very congested, and we only have so many routes in and out of downtown,” LMPD Traffic Commander Lieutenant Joe Seelye said. “We’ll utilize our light buttons, we'll open the traffic light boxes up to be inside those. Please do not get stuck in the middle of an intersection.”

Officers ask that drivers pre-plan their new routes, allow extra time, have a lot of patience and put their phones away.
