Louisville, KY (WAVE) - Rick Pitino broke the news at the beginning of his summer update. Former Card Russ Smith has already earned a guaranteed contract with the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA.
"We're extremely excited because he has signed a contract, he has a contract committed, whether he has physically signed it or not, a guaranteed contract, which is awesome," Pitino said.
Smith has spent the past few days practicing in preparation for the Pelicans summer league appearance in the Las Vegas Summer League. The teams first game is Friday night at 10:30 pm EST against an NBA D-League Select team.
"I think I'm pretty dynamic, enough to be able to contribute in different areas if needed, I'm just here to win, so whatever it takes to win, I'll be happy to fill that role," Smith said.
He was selected with the 47th pick in the NBA draft in June. Second round picks are not automatically given guaranteed contracts. The NBA league minimum is just north of $500,000 per season.
