LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - One woman suffered minor injuries when she jumped from a balcony to escape an apartment fire.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at Garden Gate Apartments on Duane Point Circle around 3 a.m. July 10. Two units were heavily damaged by the fire. Six other units also sustained some damage.

Residents on the top floor said the stairwell was filled with fire, trapping them upstairs. The woman who jumped said she had no choice because the roof had collapsed and the stairwell was blocked by the fire. A neighbor reported hearing her scream for help before she jumped.

"After I got out from the roof that collapsed I threw the dog to him and then I jumped and then other people started coming out as well," said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous.

She injured her foot in the escape, but there were no other injuries or fatalities.

Investigators believe the fire started on the upper level of the building, entering the attic before moving to other units. The Louisville Metro Arson Bureau is looking for the exact cause.
