Former GCU All-American Tyrell Fortune won
the gold medal for the U.S. men's freestyle wrestling team on the second day of
the University World Championships Wednesday in Pecs, Hungary.
Wrestling in the 125 kg/275 lbs. class, Fortune, who won an NCAA Division II national championship for the Antelopes in 2013, scored a 12-1 technical fall over Sakir Bozkurt of Turkey in the championship match. Fortune scored quickly and often for a first-period stoppage.
Fortune won by pin and major decision to reach the final. He was one of four U.S. wrestlers to medal. He took home a bronze medal from the World University Games last year in Russia.
After being crowned a Division II National Champion in 2013, the Portland, Ore., native was named the Division II Wrestler of the Year. In addition to his long list of accolades at GCU, Fortune placed second in the men's freestyle at the 2013 U.S. World Team Trials.
