HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Police had a suspect in custody less than 12 hours after The Paper City's first homicide of 2014.

Police responded to the corner of Appleton and Elm streets after receiving a report of a stabbing that occurred after a fight at about 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Officers located the victim, identified as Angel David Morales, 33, of Holyoke, who suffered a stab wound to the neck, Holyoke police Lt. Jim Albert said.

Morales was transported to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to Albert.

State and local police initiated an investigation, which led to the arrest of Jorge Rodriguez-Nieves, 40, of Holyoke. He was found in Springfield about 11 p.m. Sunday and was taken into custody without incident, Albert said.

The investigation is ongoing, but police believe the incident was a personal dispute between Morales and Rodriguez-Nieves and is not being considered gang-related, Albert said.

Rodriguez-Nieves will be arraigned Monday in Holyoke District Court.

Holyoke Police Chief Jim Neiswanger said the homicide had nothing to do with the nearby Hispanic Family Festival parade.

The last homicide in Holyoke occurred in September 2013.
