Man, woman taken in custody after standoff in Waldo neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

Authorities took a man and woman into custody following a standoff in the Waldo neighborhood Monday afternoon.

Kansas City police took the man and woman into custody about 5:30 p.m. Officers had surrounded the home after a man believed to be armed had locked himself inside the home.

Kansas City police were called at 1 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of West 77th Terrace, which is in the Waldo area of Kansas City.

At 1:30 p.m., police commanders called an Operation 100, which summoned negotiators and additional police resources to the scene.

Police believed the man was armed.

Initially no homes were evacuated, but later some homes were evacuated.

West 77th Terrace was blocked off from Brookside Road on the west to Main Street on the east. A police command post was set up near the intersection of East 78th and Main Street.

Police recognized the man's vehicle at the home. After running the plates to verify that it was the wanted man's vehicle, they approached him. After speaking with him in the driveway, the man rather than go with police ran back inside the residence.

Shortly after police provided a phone so that they could communicate with those inside the residence, the man and woman surrendered to officers.
