LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Two officers were injured while chasing a man accused of firing shots during an attempted theft.
According to an arrest report filed by Louisville Metro police, around 3:50 p.m. July 14, Kelne Barnett, 19, and another man approached a juvenile on a moped near 19th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard and asked to buy it. When the victim said they did not want to sell the moped the men assaulted the juvenile, causing lacerations to victim’s knees. Also, a shot was fired into the air.
When officers arrived they found Barnett had a gun which had been fired several times. Officers told Barnett to remove his hand from his pocket. Instead he fled on foot across traffic.
Police said Barnett pitched the gun over a fence in the 1800 block of Muhammad Ali, then climbed the fence. One officer climbed fence after him and injured his hand. Another officer was injured with two small cuts.
K-9 officers located a Glock 9mm loaded with one round in the chamber and a bag of marijuana near the gun. After Barnett was arrested police found a Glock magazine matching the one in the recovered gun.
Barnett is charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of marijuana, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, two charges of third degree assault, tampering with physical evidence, criminal trespass, robbery, two charges of wanton endangerment and fleeing on foot.
