LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Leaders of Louisville EMS and suburban fire districts have agreed to resume discussions about how to best respond to medical emergencies.

Currently, the closest fire truck in many Louisville suburbs might not respond in the event of a medical emergency.

The Jefferson County Fire Chiefs Association made the decision to send crews only to the highest-priority medical calls. The move has been in the works for a year, and it's all because of tight budgets and a strict cap the state placed on the amount of tax money the suburban districts can collect.

The fire chiefs said they've always been willing to talk about the issue.

Mayor Greg Fischer's office says talks will resume on July 22.
