LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Louisville Metro Police Department has updated its traffic and parking plan for the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on August 4 through 10.

A press release from the LMPD media relations office encourages the public to be conscious of golf carts and increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area throughout the event.

In an effort to ease congestion, police officers will be posted at all key locations and in intersections along routes to and from Valhalla. Other traffic control measures will include tow trucks on standby at multiple locations.

The speed limit on Shelbyville Road has been reduced to 45 miles per hour for the duration of the PGA Championship. LMPD traffic commanders will continually monitor the traffic flow and make any necessary adjustments, according to the news release. Traffic is expected to increase as the week progresses.

Previously, PGA of America and the PGA Traffic Committee unveiled their traffic and parking plan for the 2014 PGA Championship. PGA of America said the plan's main goal is to ensure all 250,000 anticipated tournament spectators are able to travel safely to and from the venue.

The plan includes routes to public parking, shuttle details and other pertinent transportation information.

"The PGA of America has been working to create a safe and effective travel plan for our spectators for some time now," said Brett Sterba, Championship Director for the 2014 PGA Championship. "We want this to be a safe, fun and memorable event for everyone."

The Louisville Metro Police Department and other key public safety officials serving on the Traffic and Safety Committee have created an Incident Action Plan to circumvent any unplanned issues away from the golf course during the PGA Championship.

"Our entire community, including those of us at LMPD, are excited to be a part of the PGA Championship," said Major Kelly Jones, Commander of the Special Operations Division of LMPD. "We encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the plans in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable time."

General public parking at Churchill Downs and Papa John's Cardinal Stadium will be free of charge. The Churchill Downs parking area is located inside Gate 10 off Longfield Avenue. Parking at the stadium will be located in the Green Lot off South Floyd Street.

Shuttles will operate from two public parking lots to the main PGA bus terminal at Valhalla Golf Club. The shuttle service will be at 6:30 a.m. and continue until a half-hour after the gates close each day of the tournament.

Public parking will not be available at Valhalla Golf Club or the surrounding area during the tournament. There will also be no walk-in access to any gate surrounding Valhalla during championship week. Official drop off and pickup locations for hotel shuttles, taxis and private vehicles will be provided in a specific section of the PGA public parking lots at Churchill Downs and Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

Parking for the disabled will be available in a specific PGA lot at Valhalla Golf Club. To obtain handicap parking access, call 877-472-7275 before July 31.

PGA of America encourages the public to carpool to and from the championship to help alleviate traffic congestion and potential parking problems.
