LA GRANGE, KY (WAVE) - A special program is underway in Oldham County to ensure incoming first graders are reading-ready.

For little ones fresh out of kindergarten, being read to during story time can be lots of fun. When those same students become the readers, however, it can be a challenge.

"They're starting to grasp those skills," said Oldham County Schools Elementary Level Supervisor of Instruction Director Amy Cordrey. "Over the summer any student can lose up to 40 percent of the learning, especially in reading and mathematics. So we wanted to catch that gap that is still there and really target it before they enter first grade."

Thanks to sponsored partnerships with the Gheens Foundation and Metro United Way, Oldham County Schools have enrolled 45 hand-picked soon-to-be first-graders in their first ever Camp Literacy Live.

"The program runs four weeks, Monday through Thursday," began Cordrey. "It is all day from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m."

Following a free breakfast, campers spend the first half of the day working one-on-one with reading recovery instructors.

"The Kentucky Science Center takes over after lunch and engages them in science," said Cordrey.

The workload, however, does not end when the little campers leave for the day. As it turns out, parents have homework too.

"Our parents who have graciously shared their children with us have two parent workshops and an information session so that they can connect at home with what they're learning here each day," said Cordrey. "They made a promise to read with their child every night."

While the program has reached capacity, camp organizers said other reading help is available for families with little learners in need.

"They can also contact the literacy coach or reading recovery teacher at their child's school to get some specific strategies," said Cordrey.

Camp organizers said taking such steps could not only help boost literacy but also student confidence as time ticks down to the first day of school.

The 45-day camp will wrap up on August 8. Oldham County Schools will resume classes August 20.
