LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - With less than a month to the start of a new school year, a last minute push to register students by the Jefferson County Public Schools is ramping up throughout the city. All week JCPS officials have been hosting mobile registrations. From schools to hotels, the registration sites have been equally as diverse as the families turning out to sign up.

While it looked like a pretty typical bus from the outside, one foot inside the JCPS Mobile App Bus proved it to be anything but with its hardwood and mounted TV.

"This is my first time actually being on this," said Latiesa Kennedy, a JCPS parent.

Having recently relocated, Kennedy learned paperwork had to be updated for her son.

"He's six," said Kennedy. "I've got to reregister him because I moved my address."

For the west Louisville mother, the Friday appointment in the parking lot of Hotel Louisville could not have come at a better time or place.

"I've had a break from work so I'm finally able to get to it," said Kennedy.

That's music to the ears of Jonathan Lowe, JCPS student assignment director, since the mobile registration stops had been carefully planned.

"We looked at where there were places where students were signing up for school late or later, closer to the beginning of the school year and we are targeting those neighborhoods," said Lowe. "We are coming several times over the course of the summer to Hotel Louisville and part of that is because we want to make sure that families that are experiencing challenges and difficulties and homelessness are able to get connected to schools."

From battling homelessness to a lack of computer access, many of the district's families face a variety of challenges. Lowe said the mobile registration bus is just one of many services offered by district to help keep education within reach for every child no matter his or her families' circumstances.

"Some families have complicated situations," said Lowe. "So, we want to go out and reach people where they are and lend a hand and get them in school."

Busy parents like Kennedy said they appreciated the convenience the bus turned office provided for families on the go.

"It makes it easier for people to come here or the other locations," said Kennedy.

Mobile registrations will continue through August 11, just two days before classes resume for JCPS schools. For a complete list of mobile registration sites and times, click here.
