The former senator says he has a "very positive outlook."

“I spoke with Sen. Ford last week about his plans to undergo treatment," said Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear. "The Senator and Mrs. Ford are like family to Jane and me, and we are confident that the treatment will be a success. Sen. Ford is an amazing individual who has done so much for Kentucky. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Commonwealth are with him and his family during this time.”

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell said, "[My wife] Elaine and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator Ford during this difficult time, and we join all of Kentucky in expressing our support for him and his family."

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate against incumbent McConnell in the November general election, issued this statement: "My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Senator Ford and his family. He is a mentor and friend. He is a fighter and from talking with him this week he knows the Commonwealth stands with him in this battle."
