3 fires in Old Louisville investigated; restaurant damaged

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Several arson investigations are underway following three separate fires near Old Louisville. Investigators are calling the fires suspicious after at least one of them caused the Old Louisville Tavern Bar and Grill on South Fourth Street to go up in flames around 3:30 a.m.

Even as sparks flared inside what remained of Scott Lukemire's business investment, the Old Louisville Tavern Bar and Grill co-owner refused to let his good spirit be broken.

"I'm a strong believe that things happen for a reason," said Lukemire. "I'm going to stay as positive as I can, even with what's going on behind us."

"It came in as a trash fire in the rear of the building," said Lt. Col. Carroll Haueter with Louisville Fire and Rescue. "It warrants a suspicious fire. We do have arson on the scene."

"The fire department said that they've had a couple of trash fires that had been started over the past few weeks," said Lukemire. "Obviously, I think this one probably escalated more than the others did."

Turns out at least two other trash fires were set nearby. One of them was near South 1st Street and East Oak Street, the other near South 3rd Street and West Magnolia Avenue. Firefighters contained both dumpster fires before they could cause further damage. The Old Louisville Tavern Bar and Grill did not fair as well.

"The damage to the upstairs is pretty extensive," said Lukemire.

Despite the flames shooting through the bar and grill's roof, Lukemire said there is a silver-lining.

"We didn't lose any alcohol," said Lukemire.

While it may be too soon to tell when the bar will reopen, Lukemire remained hopeful one man's burning trash could become another man's treasure.

"We're going to make it better," said Lukemire. "We're going to come back strong."

While no members of the bar staff were injuries, at least one firefighter was treated for a sprained back while putting out the fire.
