Families and schools prepare as summer break nears an end

. -

SELLERSBURG, IN (WAVE) – The clock is ticking and summer break is almost over for kids in Southern Indiana. Schools are putting last minute touches in the hallways and in the classroom to get things up and running for the 2014-2015 school year.

At Silver Creek Elementary, parents are coming in to get their children registered. School begins on July 31, along with many other schools in Southern Indiana. For Tom Brillhart, it’s his first year as principal of Silver Creek Elementary. He says he’s thrilled to get the school year started for the more than 800 students expected.

Brillhart suggests parents take a look at their website to see what supplies their children need. He also suggests having a conversation with children about getting ready for school, going to bed on time, and expectations from the school year.

Students at Jefferson County Public Schools return to the classroom August 13. The district has yet to release a back-to-school-supply list. For years, the list has varied from school to school. The district is expected to release a more basic standardized supply list for 2014-2015 on Friday. The goal is to cut costs for parents. The reworking of school supply lists is also a response to the recommendation that stemmed from the state auditor report on the district from earlier this year.
