Police: Suspect and street robbery victim exchanged gunfire

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Two men were treated for gunshot wounds after a shooting during a street robbery in the Phoenix Hill neighborhood.

Louisville Metro Police were called to the 500 block of E. Liberty near Jackson St. around 8:20 a.m. LMPD said both the robbery suspect and the intended victim were armed and the two exchanged gunfire.

According to John Drees, a University of Louisville spokesman, the victim is an employee of the university. Drees said the man was shot in the leg. Both men were taken to University of Louisville Hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

One of the involved parties ran from the scene and stopped about a block away on Jackson and Muhammad Ali Blvd.

Dwight Mitchell, a LMPD spokesman, said there have been several robberies in the area recently involving UofL students. Mitchell said detectives are looking to see if this case is connected to the others.
