LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man hired to be a woman's caretaker is facing charges that he used her financial information to make thousands of dollars in purchases.

During the month of December 2013 Louisville Metro Police say Steven T. Benton, 28, of Louisville, and a co-defendant went to several Lowe's Home Improvement Centers and made unauthorized charges totaling $4,852 on a woman's account without her consent.

The warrant says Benton and the unnamed co-defendant were hired to be caretakers of the woman by her power of attorney. In making the purchases, they represented themselves to be the woman's contractor and had the cashier's contact the "cardholder" by phone to get credit information for the transaction.

Detectives were able to get receipts for each transaction, along with video from the stores.

Benton was arrested by Harrodsburg police on July 26 on a warrant issued in Jefferson County. He is being held in the Boyle County Detention Center for misuse of electronic information and theft by deception.
