FORT KNOX, KY (WAVE) – A group of soldiers at Fort Knox received medals Monday for saving a life not on the battlefield, but rather at a local hang out in Radcliff, Kentucky.

In June, U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant Kelby Tidey and Jordan Flynn decided to go grab dinner at an Applebee's. They weren't at the restaurant long when a woman started choking and turning blue.

An Army anesthesiologist who was in the restaurant started the Heimlich, but as the woman slipped from consciousness, Army nurses Tidey and Jordan Flynn sprang into action.

"I was doing the best that I could. Me and Lieutenant Flynn,” Tidey said. "I couldn't imagine how I would have felt if she would've passed away. I would've felt terrible."

It was that determination to serve that now had them in front of the Brigadier General. Tidey and Flynn were nervous as they made their way on stage.

"It was actually kind of nerve racking, but it felt good," Flynn said. They both had Army Commendation Medals pinned above their hearts. "You don't get to really wear it around, only for special events, so it's kind of kept in the back pocket."

Brigadier General Peggy Combs explained what the medals represent.

"My favorite saying about awards, they are a small scrap of cloth and a little piece of medal, but they certainly represent a huge piece of our heart," she said.

Both men insist they only did what they were only doing their job even as some told them otherwise. "My peers could have done the same thing I was just lucky enough to step up and be the first one to do it," Tidey said.
