LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A giraffe died after being struck in the head while being transported on a highway in South Africa, according to multiple reports.
Witnesses told Eye Witness News in Johannesburg, South Africa, that two giraffes were riding in an open-air truck, and one of them hit its head on an overpass.
Rick Allan, a spokesman for that country's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told Eye Witness News that the animal died a short time later; the vet confirmed the giraffe died from severe head trauma.
"We are continuing our investigation with the view to possibly lay criminal charges against those responsible," Allan told the newspaper.
Several witnesses posted photos of the giraffes on the highway moments before the tragedy, sparking outrage across Twitter and Instagram.
A local media personality named Pabi Moloi posted the photo above on Twitter, and it was retweeted more than 400 times and favorited by more than 100 people.
"Who thought this one through?" Moloi asked on Twitter. "I wish I hadn't seen this."
