Grimes, McConnell mistake-free on Fancy Farm morning

Posted: Updated:

FANCY FARM, KY (WAVE) – Kentucky’s U.S. Senate candidates moved coolly through speeches to their supporters at dueling breakfasts held just miles from the Fancy Farm stage Saturday morning.

Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes landed punchlines at Mayfield High School against her opponent, Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, who gave his own speech at nearby Graves County High School.

Before the high-stakes speeches at the state’s biggest political event, Grimes stuck to her message by painting McConnell as an out-of-touch Washington politician.

And McConnell held up a bumper sticker that read “Grimes = Obama,” a comparison with the unpopular President Barack Obama that he uses often enough to be a campaign slogan.

All eyes will be on the 550 person village of Fancy Farm on Saturday, where the candidates may sit on the same stage together for the last time in the fall campaign.

Both have agreed to a debate, but they haven’t settled on the same one. The candidates have named debate conditions that don’t satisfy the other.
