DUBOIS COUNTY, IN (WAVE) – Police say a 9-month-old child was hospitalized after being struck by a man who was out of a correctional facility on work release.

Indiana State Police said 24-year-old Arvel Griffey Jr. of Loogootee was at a park Friday with a woman and her child while out on work release. Investigators believe the child started crying on the way back to the Dubois County Community Corrections Center and Griffey struck the child, Sergeant Philip Hensley said. The child was taken to Memorial Hospital with bleeding and swelling around the genitalia, according to a report from ISP.

Child Protective Services notified state police about the injuries. Troopers arrested Griffey at the Corrections Center without incident, and he was transferred to the Dubois County Jail where he is being held without bond.

Griffey is charged with battery of a person less than 14 years old, a felony.
