FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - A cemetery is apologizing for a big mistake after a family had to watch the same loved one buried twice.

On Aug. 5, Marilyn Monroe, 72, was buried at Frankfort Cemetery. Her family says the vault holding her body was sticking out of the ground and there was four inches of dirt on one side.

The superintendent of Frankfort Cemetery admitted Monroe was not buried at the required six feet below ground because crews hit rock and ran out of time after eight funerals in four days.

In an attempt to right the wrong crews removed the vault, jack hammered through the rock and reburied Monroe.

Monroe's children say they will never understand how it happened in the first place.

"It's like you gotta go do all this, you gotta pull my mom back out of the ground and she's suffered enough for the past month," said Larry Monroe, Marilyn Monroe's son.

"I hope this here brings it to attention that another loved one don't get done the way we got done," said Tammy Cook, Monroe's daughter, "'Cause I'm telling you, it's not fun to go through."

The Attorney General's office said this is the only complaint they've heard against Frankfort Cemetery in the last five years.
