CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston emergency officials are warning motorists about an unusual morning high tide that could combine with Sunday night flooding concerns to cause headaches for the morning commute.

The City of Charleston Emergency Management Department sent out a warning for morning commuters to pay particular attention to the weather because of an unusual high tide expected around 8:52 a.m. on Monday, according to Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis.

The so-called "supermoon" makes this high tide unusual because the moon is in its closest proximity to the earth, which could cause high tide to be at a higher level than normal.

The department said low-lying areas could have standing water and possible flooding and remain aware of their surroundings.

Experts say you should avoid driving into water on the road. The water is usually deeper than it appears, NWS says, and the road may be washed out below. Only one foot of water will stall a vehicle and less than two feet can carry away a vehicle. Flooding is the number one weather-related cause of death in the United States.

The National Weather Service posted a variety of alerts about the possibility of flooding, from flash flood warnings to coastal flood advisories, from Wilmington, North Carolina south into Georgia. A coastal flood advisory will be in effect for downtown Charleston from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
