LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Louisville Bats announced Thursday that NL All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips will be joining the team on a rehabilitation assignment.

Phillips, 33, a three-time All-Star for the National League and four-time Gold Glove winner, has been on the disabled list since injuring his left thumb on July 10 while diving for a ball. Phillips underwent surgery the next day.

The rehabilitation assignment and minor league appearance will be the first for Phillips since being acquired by the Reds in 2006 from the Cleveland Indians.

A Major League rehabilitation assignment could last up to 20 days, but the Bats said Phillips' status beyond Friday night's game has not be determined.

The Bats have a brief two-game homestand against Indianapolis. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
