I-65 closures, detours to have major impact on traffic
FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -
Friday morning's deadly tanker truck explosion on Interstate 65 in Franklin had an immediate effect on traffic, and it's expected to get worse before it gets better.
Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will demolish the Peytonsville Road overpass, closing lanes in both direction on I-65 beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday.
All lanes are expected to reopen by 2 p.m. Monday.
This will require motorists to detour onto Peytonsville Road, exiting and then re-entering the interstate via the onramps to avoid crossing under the damaged bridge.
A newly constructed bridge, not yet in service, will also have to be demolished and replaced. There is currently no time table for when that work will take place.
Delays are expects not just on I-65, but across Williamson County.
Williamson County Schools is urging parents to consider letting their children ride school buses, rather than driving them to and from school, to help alleviate traffic near school zones.
"Think about it, every school bus can hold about 80 students," said Williamson County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney. "And that's 80 cars we don't have to have going back and forth to school. We can sharply reduce the amount of traffic we have."
The bridge closure affects three Williamson County Schools bus routes.
The Franklin Police Department is asking employers to consider flexing employees' hours to relieve some of the expected congestion on I-65 and detour routes.
The City of Franklin and Williamson County are establishing an emergency response staging area at the Williamson County Agricultural Center to ensure emergency services to citizens on the southeast side of Franklin.
Equipment and personnel from Franklin Police, Franklin Fire, and Williamson County EMS will be located there.
The Peytonsville exit is the main exit for rapidly growing south Franklin, Thompson's Station and Spring Hill.
