FLOYD COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Cody Cashion was given the maximum sentence on Monday in the deaths of three New Albany children in a January house fire.

At his sentencing, a judge sentenced Cashion to 65 years for the three murders and 50 years for arson.

Cashion, 18, told the judge he was "sorry" before he was sentenced.

Cashion entered a guilty plea to three counts of murder and one count of arson resulting in serious bodily injury during an appearance in Floyd County Superior Court on July 18.

During the early morning hours of January 4, Cashion fired a flare into a home on Ealy Street. The resulting fire killed 2-year-old Trinity, 4-year-old Tyrese and 6-year-old Tai'zah Hughes and badly burned their sister, 5-year-old Tatyana Hughes.

According to prosecutors, Cashion, along with Shelby Makowsky, 18, Kylie Jenks, 19, and a 17-year old girl, was trying to exact revenge on a man who lived at the home. He was not there at the time.

Makowsky pleaded guilty on a charge of conspiracy to commit arson. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Jenks and the juvenile are still awaiting trial.

"I'm begging you to give [Cashion] the maxium sentence," the victims' grandmother, Marie Clark, said to the judge on Monday. "That house was not abandoned. Someone lived in that house, so someone was going to get hurt, and I didn't want them to keep downsizing the fact that they didn't know the babies were in there."

Cashion's earliest release date is August 2046.
