Money embezzled from Williamson County school PTO

Some Williamson County parents were heartbroken to learn that thousands of dollars raised by their school's PTO have gone missing.

Hillsboro Elementary/Middle School PTO members learned last week that between $15,000 and $20,000 was apparently embezzled.

"We are trusting people and we had no reason not to trust another parent," said Jennifer Smith, acting president of the school's PTO.

The PTO held a big fundraiser last fall called Barnaroo. The money raised was going to be used to buy laptops for the school, but the check bounced.

The PTO has not named a suspect and no one has been arrested at this time.

"We had safeguards in place, and every one of them was circumvented," Smith said.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office is now investigating.

Williamson County Schools central office is helping the PTO by having an audit. Superintendent Mike Looney said he supports a prosecution, if warranted.

"I will do everything I can to insist on criminal charges if there is enough information to warrant one," Looney said.

Looney said he has contributed $500 to the account to rebuild the PTO fund and hopes others will donate too.
