CRESTWOOD, KY (WAVE) - August 20 marked the first day in of the new school year in Oldham County. Teachers said they were ready for their new students, but no one was more ready than Sacha Texas.

Sacha has mild cerebral palsy and had surgery on her legs. She's been wheelchair bound for awhile. All she wanted to do is walk into Kenwood Station Elementary School on the first day of school. It's something Sacha said she worked very hard to make happen.

"The whole summer, she's been resilient," said Matt Bratcher. "For her not being able to get up in the wheelchair to be able to walk in eight weeks later ... it was her goal and she worked hard all summer to be able to get there."

The big focus across all schools this year in the district will be on reading.

This is Oldham County's first year under a new redistricting plan. Officials say overall the day went smoothly.
