LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Eight players were treated for heat exhaustion during a football game Saturday at Pleasure Ridge Park High School.
A WAVE 3 News crew saw two players being loaded into ambulances at the Doss High School and PRP High School game, and MetroSafe confirmed that eight players were treated but did not say how many were taken to the hospital.
The temperature in Louisville reached 89 degrees, with the heat index topping out at 99 degrees.
PRP won the game 28-6.
Another game, between Ballard High School and St. Xavier High School, ended after the first half due to heat. St. X won 17-0.
According to Kentucky High School Athletics Association guidelines, all sporting events must be canceled if the heat index reaches 104. Because football requires additional padding and helmets, officials can cancel a game when the heat index reaches 99 degrees, if they deem it necessary. When temperatures reach that level, officials must check the field temperature every half-hour.
