Duke Energy officials: Fuel spill larger than original estimate

NEW RICHMOND, OH (FOX19) -

Duke Energy officials announced Monday that the amount of diesel fuel released into the Ohio River last week was underestimated by 4,000 gallons.

Duke originally reported that 5,000 gallons of fuel leaked from their Beckjord Power Plant, located in New Richmond, on Aug. 18. One week later, they are saying it was approximately 9,000 gallons.

The incident occurred during what was called a "routine transfer of fuel oil" at the plant.

The 9,000 gallons of oil spilled into the Ohio River during a 15-minute time frame after which officials were able to cap the leak, according to Duke. The city's water supply was not impacted by the spill, but Greater Cincinnati Water Works shut intake valves for 24 hours as a precautionary measure.

A Cleanup Hotline has been set up for anyone who spots residue or diesel in the water or shoreline. Officials say they have received only a few calls to the hotline with no significant findings.

The Environmental Protection Agency has been working with Duke to investigate and clean up the spill. They say crews continue to monitor the river and its banks.

Beckjord was scheduled to be closed in January 2015 because Duke reportedly could not afford to update the facility to EPA requirements.
