PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The top official at the embattled Arizona Medical Board is out.

Hired fewer than six months ago, Executive Director Lloyd Vest has resigned.

CBS 5 News was the only television station at Wednesday night's meeting.

After two and a half hours in executive session, the board emerged and announced Vest is resigning, effective immediately.

Vest has been the board's executive director since March, after Lisa Wynn was fired last October for unlawfully expediting physician licensing.

"I was disheartened to learn of the new Executive Director's resignation in light of the Board's recent licensing issues uncovered over the last couple of years but it is a good sign that their Board members are taking a proactive role in overseeing the management of the Board and ensuring they are fulfilling their mission. That is what the Legislature had envisioned with the Medical Board reforms," Arizona Sen. Nancy Barto said Thursday.
