Chesterfield customer sees $91K figure on power bill

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Imagine opening up a bill and seeing a near-six digit number. A woman from Chesterfield saw a $91,076.70 figure on her Dominion Virginia Power bill, listed under "current charges." It's an enormous amount of energy for one modest home to burn. Charnise Jones said she was shocked at the number on her power bill.

"I wanted to know, how did you come up with $91,000?" asked Charnise.

Dominion only sought to charge Charnise $1,200 of the $91,000. However, Charnise was taken aback by the notion she could use tens of thousands of dollars worth of energy.

Charnise called Dominion. She says the company's customer service representative told her she was fortunate not to be charged the entire amount.

"'Look at it this way, Miss. Jones, at least we're not holding you responsible for the full $91,000 balance,'" recounted Charnise, of what she says the representative told her.

NBC12 called Dominion. The company's team poured through records and now says the $91,000 figure was a typo. A representative from Dominion apologizes for the mistake and says Charnise will get an updated bill.
