BULLITT COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - On his last day on the job, a trooper with Kentucky State Police was hit by a vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 65.
Trooper Sam Shacklette was taken to University of Louisville Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to a representative of Supporting Heroes, an organization that works with emergency responders. State police said the trooper is stable, but has several broken bones.
Kentucky State Police said Shacklette had pulled over a car for speeding, when a Ford SUV hit both Shacklette and the car he had stopped. Shacklette was thrown approximately 50 feet and landed in the shoulder.
The driver of the car that hit Shacklette, Louis Edward Dunn of Bonnieville, KY, was cited for failure to give way to a stopped emergency vehicle, a misdemeanor.
Shacklette was scheduled to retire at midnight, KSP said.
Northbound lanes of I-65 were shut down at mile marker 107 near the Hardin-Bullitt county line for several hours. At 10:40 p.m., KSP said all lanes were open.
