Carmi woman believed to be found dead rescued from mud

A woman, believed to have been found dead, was rescued after being stuck and covered in mud for 24 hours in Carmi, Illinois.

A White County Sheriff's deputy tells 14 News someone notified him around 10:00 a.m. Sunday that they found a dead body lying in the mud by the Little Wabash River.

Deputy Randy Graves says he thought the same thing when he arrived on scene, but the 39-year-old woman was alive.

Graves says before he received that call, the family of the woman called him and said she never came home after leaving on Saturday.

We're told the woman was walking along the river when she fell into the mud where no one could hear her screaming.

It took nearly 15 people to rescue her Sunday.

"There were people down there helping her," said Graves. "There were people up there who had the ropes and they would send the ropes down to us we hooked her on and they pulled her up. There were people who actually walked up to her, trying to help her."

The woman was taken to a local hospital by helicopter.

Graves says she is expected to be okay.
