(WPXI/CNN) – When Phil Laboon's relationship ended before his wedding day, he held his reception anyway in the name of charity.
“That's like life, if something happens, you roll with it,” Laboon said.
He turned the reception into a charity ball for a group that treats children in developing countries.
“We've had over 800 requests on line from people to buy tickets, people willing to fly in, people wanting to support this, donating tens of thousands of dollars,” said Dr. John Demos with Surgicorps, the non-profit benefiting from the ball.
The event was full of both friends and strangers, all wanting to be part of something special.
"I told him it was a good idea, good way to turn something negative into a positive. I was very proud of him for thinking about it,” said Kathy Laboon, Phil's mother.
