Experts say Facebook app autoplay feature costing mobile users

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - What would you say if we told you you could save money on your cell phone bill with one swipe?

Experts have found what they think could be causing so many extra monthly charges for some users.

It's one of the most popular social networks and mobile apps, but Facebook could actually be to blame for some extra fees.

A default setting in the app plays videos automatically in your Newsfeed.

All those videos add up to data usage.

So you may be maxing out your data limit and have no idea why.

The good news is you can change that without adding more data to your plan.

"One thing people might not realize is you can control which apps are allowed to use your cellular data versus if you're on WiFi," said Velocity Electronics Owner Ryan Frenz. "So that way you can control your cell phone bill. Now, Facebook in particular you can go into your Facebook settings and tell it not to use the autoplay for your data. That's one thing that's been using a lot of data for people."

The fix is simple.

Just go to"Settings," scroll down to Facebook, click on "Settings" and then "Autoplay."

Either turn it off or on WiFi-Only to prevent further data usage.

Experts say to contact your wireless carrier if you think you've fallen victim to unfair data charges.
