A colon cancer test to take at home

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Getting screened for colon cancer can be an invasive and often embarrassing procedure. But now there's a new, cutting edge screening option that can be done from the privacy of your home.

It's called Cologuard and was developed by Exact Sciences Corp.

Doctor Whitney Jones, founder of the Kentucky Cancer Foundation, testified in front of the FDA for its approval.

“Remember the most important test is the one you get done,” Dr. Jones said. "It's not this test or that test. Our job is not to promote one or the other. What we know is that when you do a screening test according to the recommendations, you are much less likely to get and die from colon cancer.”

The test is non-invasive and requires a stool sample. The test kit includes a box and shipping label for the sample to be mailed out. At the lab both the stool sample and a marker in the person's DNA are analyzed. The combination screening, the company says, can find up to 92 percent of cancers.

The test is being recommended for people 50 and older with an average risk for colon cancer. Cologuard is available through your doctor with a prescription for $600.

Colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cancer killer in the United States.
