UofL graduate working on Ebola vaccine

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Kentucky native and University of Louisville graduate is getting nods for her efforts in reducing childhood mortality rates in addition to her work on an Ebola vaccine using tobacco grown in the Bluegrass State.

Doctor Penny Heaton, who is now the director for the Bill and Melinda Gates Vaccine Foundation, spoke about her life saving work Friday during the 40th Annual Dr. John I. Perlstein Memorial Lectureship at Norton Hospital.

"We are working on vaccines against diarrhea vaccines against pneumonia, vaccines against HIV, TB, malaria, we are also working to help the world eradicate polio it's an incredible effort,” she said. “We are already seeing drops in childhood mortality."

Recently, $50 million was approved to help rush the Ebola vaccine Heaton is working on in order safe lives.

So far, the Ebola virus has claimed more than 2,200 lives.
