LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – After receiving more than $2 million in donations, a grand opening ceremony was held Wednesday for a school athletic center.
The Darrell Griffith Athletic Center is now part of the West End School in Louisville.
Griffith, who grew up a few blocks away from the school, led the University of Louisville to its first-ever NCAA tournament championship in 1980.
"This gym does a lot more than serve as a gym for these kids, this gym is a vehicle that the school can provide for these kids and for the future kids that will come through this school and the community," he said.
Many other former players were also at the event including University of Kentucky great Derek Anderson.
West End School is a free private school for at-risk young men.
