Talking down the price at major retailers

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - If you think negotiating a great price on something you want to buy is just for garage sales and flea markets, think again. One shopping expert says there are ways to lower the cost of some of your favorite items at major retailers. All you have to do is ask.

"The main idea is to come up with legitimate reasons to actually ask the store for a lower price," said Kyle James, author of the shopping blog Rather-Be-Shopping.com.

James said those reasons can include damage or your desire to purchase a floor model at a cheaper price.

James said bundling, or buying multiple items at once, is another way to save.

"You go into Best Buy, and let's say you're buying a TV and a DVD player, ask the employee nicely, 'Hey, how about I buy both of these right now, and you give me $100 off," said James.

Do these price negotiating techniques really work? WAVE News Troubleshooter Eric Flack went undercover at major retailers in Louisville to put them to the test. See what happened and how much you can save by clicking the video.
