Ky. third-grader wins contest by growing 23-pound cabbage

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The results are in and Kentucky's winner has been named in a state-by-state contest for kids who ... grow the biggest cabbage!

Turns out more than 1.5 million U.S. third-graders participated in the contest that encourages young students to grow colossal cabbages and along the way pick up some hands-on gardening experience.

Nine-year-old Reagan Prather, from Anne Mason Elementary School in Georgetown, is the Kentucky winner this year, with her cabbage weighing in at 23.8 pounds. For her accomplishment, Prather will receive a $1,000 savings bond toward education from Bonnie Plants.

Prather had a lot of competition this year. More than 22,000 young Kentucky students participated, and Prather's entry was among the 989 best-of-class finalists statewide.
