LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival Royal Court will be crowned on Monday, Jan. 12 at Macy's in Oxmoor Center.
Chosen from more than 100 applicants, the Royal Court will represent the Derby Festival and the city of Louisville as official ambassadors for the springtime tradition. They will attend nearly every official festival event beginning with Festival Unveiled on Feb. 26.
Each member of the Royal Court received two $1,000 scholarships -- one from The Fillies, Inc., and one from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation. In addition to other sponsor gifts, each woman also receives a complimentary wardrobe.
Candidates for the Royal Court must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. They are selected by a panel of out-of-state judges.
The first Derby Festival Princess was crowned in 1957, the second year of the festival. Previous princesses include former Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins and Gail Gorski, the first female pilot hired by United Airlines.
